An Egg-celent treat for dog!

By: Elizabeth Pask and Laura Scott

Last Updated:June 3, 2021

Eggs are a source of protein, calcium, vitamin A, folate, vitamin D, and fat for your canine friend. Dogs can eat eggs boiled, scrambled, poached, or fried with a little butter (as a special treat). They're versatile and a great treat. One large egg has 70 C, so small dogs may do best with a portioned cooked egg over several days.

You can even feed your dog egg shells—they're almost all calcium. Feed the egg and shell together, or dry and grind shells as a calcium source. Better-absorbed calcium sources include yogurt, cheese, ice cream, and lactose-free milk, but most dog foods are well balanced, so extra calcium may be unnecessary—especially for puppies, where the calcium-phosphorus balance matters. Adding extra calcium without balancing can cause bone and growth problems. Never feed raw egg whites, which contain an enzyme that affects biotin (B vitamin) and can sicken your dog.
